SELCALL 1.2, a SITOR SelCall translator
---------------------------------------
(C) 03-May-1993, Ralf D. Kloth (DL4TA).
SELCALL is a small and simple programm to translate maritime SITOR selcalls.
It just translates a selcall ... no sliding windows, no color, no sound, no
animation ... sorry.
SITOR selcalls are selective call identifications for selective addressing
of a distant communications station, used in SITOR radio teletype communi-
cations according to CCIR 476-3. They are 4-letter combinations.
If the SITOR teletype gear of a radiostation is allocated the selcall 'XXXX',
it will recognize and automagically reply to any call from any station calling
with the selcall XXXX.
While radioamateurs and other fixed stations may use any 4-letter combination
as a selcall, there are more strict rules in the maritime mobile service (MMS).
The maritime mobile service (MMS) uses 4- and 5-figure selective call numbers.
The 4-figure numbers are assigned to coast stations and and the 5-figure
numbers are assigned to ship stations on a world wide basis.
These figure selcall numbers are mapped to letter selcall combinations
suitable for SITOR transmission.
The SITOR equipment used in the MMS does this translation automatically.
The radio operator keys in the assigned selcall number and does not care about
the 4-letter word transmitted on air.
(No, not *those* 4-letter-words ... :-).
This SELCALL.EXE program does the translation between an assigned maritime
figure selcall number and the 4-letter selcall transmitted on the radio.
While the translation between a 4-figure combination and a 4-letter combination
is a simple one-to-one substitution, the 5-figure ---> 4-letter mapping is a
little more sophisticated, but still easy to be done.
Examples: assigned MMS selcall SITOR transmission
number on air
0001 translates to : VVVX
1234 XQKM
2222 QQQQ
9123 SXQK
00001 TVVX
12345 QEMP
22222 QQUQ
91230 XQET
If a 4-figure selcall number matches the selcall ID of a coast station, the
program will tell so.
Installation:
The program comes as a compressed archive file SELCAL12.ZIP.
The archive has been created by PKZIP 2.04e (PKWARE Inc) and contains the
following files:
SELCALL.DOC 20398 3.05.93 14.26
SELCALL.EXE 15136 3.05.93 13.54
SELCALL.NOT 354 3.05.93 14.20
Use PKUNZIP 2.xx to unpack.
Usage of the SELCALL.EXE program:
SELCALL <selcall> : translates a SITOR-selcall from 4-letters into 4- and
5-figures representation and vice versa.
Example: SELCALL 0001, SELCALL 12345, or SELCALL QEMP.
4-letter inputs which cannot be translated into a valid
maritime selcall number are rejected.
SELCALL ? : displays this short help text.
SELCALL CHECK : checks the .EXE program file for possible modification
by a virus.
SELCALL HELP : displays this short help text.
Security:
The program has been compiled and PKZIPed on a PC checked with the latest
SCANV102 virus checker (McAffee SCAN 9.14 V102) and found to be clean.
SELCALL.EXE is of 03-May-1993, has a length of 15136 bytes, and the VALIDATE.COM
0.4 (McAffee) reports checksums of D04B and 1DB9.
The program has a small CRC check routine to check itself against possible
modifications in its EXE-file, if invoked with SELCALL CHECK. It re-reads the
EXE-file to calculate the CRC.
Except for the program load itself (disk read), SELCALL.EXE does NO further
disk-I/O (if you don't > pipe the output to a file or use the CHECK parameter).
Legal:
The use of this program is FREE. It may be distributed freely, if it is
left intact and unmodified and if the SELCALL.EXE is accompanied by this
unmodified SELCALL.DOC file.
This program is distributed 'as is', in the hope that it will be useful,
but WITHOUT ANY WARRANTY ... and yes, you use it at own risk.
